Plan Your New Zealand Great Walk

For more than 10 years, our group of mates has reunited each year to complete a New Zealand Great Walk. What started as a hiking trip has now become a tradition—and along the way we've learned a thing or two about how to secure DOC hut bookings, how to get to these remote tracks, and what gear to take to survive several days on the trail.

We're not experts, just ordinary hikers sharing first-hand experiences, practical advice, and some sneaky tips to help others make the most of their time in New Zealand's backcountry.

Planning a New Zealand Great Walk can feel overwhelming, especially if it's your first multi-day hike. It can be pretty difficult finding all the information you need to plan a Great Walk of New Zealand in one place. That's why at On the Slowdown we've created a New Zealand Great Walks guide. Here you'll find everything you need including information on each Great Walk, how to choose a Great Walk, how to book DOC huts, and help on planning Great Walk transport and accommodation.  We will also offer trail insights, planning tips, gear recommendations, and lessons learned from our adventures.

Whether you are finally hiking the famous Milford Track or ticking off another bucket list New Zealand Great Walk like the Abel Tasman Track or Routeburn Track, we have you covered.
