Footwear/Socks/Gaiters

Hiking boots or shoes are essential for a great walk as they provide the necessary support and protection for your feet. They are designed to withstand the rugged terrain and provide better traction, preventing slips and falls. The right footwear can make all the difference for a comfortable and enjoyable hiking experience. Footwear that is too big or small or not appropriate for the trail can hurt your feet and make for a painful hike.

The biggest question to answer is whether to wear hiking boots, hiking shoes, or trail runners for the track? It really comes down to personal preference and the terrain of the Great Walk. The Abel Tasman can easily be completed in a trail runner but in the long stretches of mud on the Hump Ridge and rocky terrain of the Paparoa Track, you may be happier in a boot.

Hiking socks are just as important as boots to keep your feet happy and there are plenty of options out there, but which ones are right for you? Gaiters can also come in handy on the trail to keep debris, mud, and snow out of boots. Depending on the Great Walk they can either be optional or a necessity.

Feet Essentials

Hiking boots vs shoes

Hiking boots provide better support and protection on the trail. However, increasingly many hikers choose to wear hiking shoes or trail runners which still offer good traction, are more comfortable and lightweight, but provide less support.

Hybrid boots can give you the support of a boot, the comfort of a trail runner, and can be comfortable right out of the box. Whilst not as durable as a classic boot they will often take less time to break in and can be lighter.

Hikers Wool

Hikers' wool is a must have in our opinion and has saved many of us from blisters and sore feet. Placed in your socks or boots anywhere you feel rubbing as soon as possible will save you from a lot of discomfort on the track. This stuff is magic.

Socks

Good socks are important on the trail to keep your feet cushy and comfortable. Next to food and water, socks are pretty important in keeping you happy. Merino socks will keep your feet dry by wicking away sweat and are naturally odor resistant. Toe socks (ugly as they may be) or double layered socks are popular options that reduce rubbing and prevent blisters altogether.

Gaiters

Gaiters are an optional extra that prevent stones and debris from getting inside your footwear. Gaiters can protect your legs from abrasions, water, snow, and mud helping to keep your feet dry and warm. Gaiters are recommended for the Hump Ridge / Rakiura tracks which have long sections of deep mud.
