Great Walks of New Zealand

When is the best time to walk?
New Zealand's summer starts from December until February and the temperatures range from 21-32 degrees Celsius (70-90 degrees F). This is the most popular time of year to complete the Great Walks.
Some Great Walks can be walked year-round - Abel Tasman, Lake Waikaremoana, Heaphy, Paparoa, and Rakiura. If you are looking for a quieter track and autumnal colours, the shoulder seasons in spring and autumn can be perfect times to book.
The remaining Great Walks should be completed during the Great Walks Season which runs from approx late October to end of April. Check the Department of Conservation (DOC) website in April each year for the exact season opening dates for the upcoming season. Outside the Great Walk Season the Kepler, Milford, Routeburn, Tongariro, and Whanganui Journey should only be attempted by fit, very experienced, and well-equipped hikers/canoeists (ice-axe, crampons, trail finding abilities). There are risks of avalanches on the alpine sections and the hut facilities are greatly reduced outside of this season. The Hump Ridge Track is closed outside of the Great Walks season.
We always hike during the Great Walk season in the hopes of scoring warmer and drier weather and have found February and March can have some of the best temperatures, but not always! We have encountered snow in February. New Zealand weather is highly changeable, and it is common to experience 4 seasons in one day. No matter when you hike it's important to be prepared with appropriate gear for any conditions. Always check the weather forecast before heading out and check in at the DOC offices to get your passes and important information before heading off.
